Tax Credits
George Osborne was left reeling tonight after peers dramatically threw out the government's planned tax credits cuts - overturning the views of elected MPs.
The House of Lords voted 289 to 272 delay the changes for three years until measures could be introduced.

Not such a good idea after all eh Gideon.........

Could someone explain to me what tax credits are? Loved that outraged woman on the radio the other week, typical outraged Brit. Our national motto should be 'its disgoostin'

Re: Tax Credits
Brunno turns out she wont actually be losing a penny and freely admits she didn't know the details.

The overall policy idea is correct. Tax credits went from 4 billion to 30 billion and at the same time period in work poverty rose 25% (all under labour).

HOWEVER, only an idiot would support the current policy in full and it is quite clear more work needs to be done.

This is yet another example of why Chancellors dont make good PMs!

Re: Tax Credits
In essence they are a benefit. Its split into two types. Working tax credit, which is a top up for the low paid (rate depending on hours worked). The other element is Child Tax credit. This is paid if you have kids of education age (up to 19) and family income is less than 25k (I think).

There is a childcare element that can be claimed, as well as extra help for those with children who have disabilities.

He'll just find a different way to get the £4 billion. I wouldn't mind betting they have already planned for this and have a card up their sleeve.

Probably cut Child Allowance instead, just another way to save the money.

It was announced at the budget Romford but I would certainly agree if you wished to say Osborne was incompetent over this measure.

Re: Tax Credits
This government was elected with the consent of 25% of the electorate. That has been around the percentage for elected governments for some time. Even so the country at large are happy to go along with most legislation that comes out of Westminster. Every so often though the fact a government really has no truly democratic mandate is brought to light. The Poll tax was one prime example and this Tax Credits issue is another one.

I think that the government will find a way of climbing down but in a way to avoid calling it a U turn. If they do it will be a win for democracy.

Re: Tax Credits
..bit embarrassing that Cam promised not to cut them during election campaign. (not saying other parties don't lie in election campaigns). This does contribute towards the increasing bad feeling towards politicians and cynicism about politics.
